Class: 7IG

Initials: B.C., A.G., D.S.___

A. Introduction:

There has been a massive volcanic explosion at Yellowstone National Park, in the U.S. The dust and gases from the volcano have gone into the air around the whole world. We three have to find a way to survive.

B. Problem:

How do we survive in this dusty, dark world? Also, the volcano would cause acid rain all over the Earth.

C. Survival Plan:

We will use our knowledge of the Earth's Crust, mixtures & solutions, heat, & biology to create a survival plan to create a miniature biosphere.

Plan:

Step 1: Chose a place.

We chose to build our miniature biosphere on the side of a mountain. We did this so our plants could get sun. The dust and smog from the volcano blocked the light. There were lots of rocks to build tools and shelter. We also decided to build near a water supply. There are also lots of rocks for making tools, including limestone.

Step 2: Design/plan a shelter.

We planned to build our shelter half way up a tall mountain. We planned to use glass and metal from the city to build a roof. The roof would let sun in. It would keep water inside for our plants and for our needs. These materials would break down less than wood. We would make a huge chimney out rock and burn coal from inside the mountain for heat when needed. Burning the coal would make CO2 and water. The plants would make O2.

Step 3: Build a structure.

First, we dug a whole in the side of the mountain for living areas. The glass would cover the dome for a greenhouse.

Step 4: Grow food.

We would grow plants able to survive in the acid soil. Also, we can use crushed limestonein the soil. This will decrease the acid. We would grow nuts and beans for protein.

Step 5: Clean water.

We would make sure the water we drink is safe by ...

Step 6: Clean air.

We would make sure our is clean by ...

Step 7: ...

Step 8:

...

Step 9: Recycle

We would recycle by ... because...

D. Conclusion:

We would survive the disaster by... The biggest challenge will be to ...
